More nonspecialists offer cosmetic procedures
More doctors certified in specialties other than plastic surgery are offering invasive cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation and face-lifts, resulting in more dissatisfied -- and sometimes disfigured -- patients, plastic surgeons say. "The public needs to be protected from doctors who are not upfront about what board certifications they have," said American Society of Plastic Surgeons President Malcolm Z. Roth. The extent of training for some practitioners can be a weekend course taught by doctors who are also not board-certified in plastic surgery, plastic surgeon Joel Aronowitz said.
