■ASPS: Use caution with stem cell procedures


Marketing may be ahead of science in stem cell-based breast augmentation and facial enhancement, doctors say. Though lab and clinical studies are encouraging, the science does not yet support some claims being made, University of Pittsburgh plastic surgeon and stem cell expert Dr. J. Peter Rubin said. A joint task force of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery said members should refrain from offering stem cell-based cosmetic procedures until studies prove they are safe and effective.
